    Minor Irrigation

The ZP Minor Irrigation Department is one of the 14 departments under Amravati Zilla Parishad. The District Water Conservation Officer heads the department.

The department executes projects like irrigation tanks with capacities ranging from 0 to 100 hectares, percolation tanks, village tanks, Kolhapuri-type bunds, cement nala bunds, storage dams, and reservoirs.

Planning for non-tribal areas is conducted through the Planning Department, whereas planning for tribal areas is done through the Tribal Department.

The primary objective of the Minor Irrigation Department is water management, creation, and maintenance of irrigation projects. It ensures proper use of water resources, water storage, and the availability of water for irrigation purposes.

    General Functions:

    • Conservation and utilization of water resources
    • Construction of small reservoirs and bunds on rivers and streams
    • Maintenance of irrigation structures
    • Development of irrigation facilities and equitable water distribution
    • Increasing water storage capacity

Construction and Maintenance of Village Tanks

    • Village tanks are created by building earthen dams near the village streams.
    • They help recharge wells through percolation and provide drinking water for livestock and birds.

Construction of Cement Nala Bunds/Storage Bunds

    • These are structures built across rivers and streams to store water and redirect it to agricultural lands.
    • They primarily recharge wells through percolation.

    Irrigation Tanks

    • The primary goal is to supply water for agricultural irrigation.
    • These tanks are designed to ensure an adequate and regulated supply of water to crops.

    Kolhapuri-Type Bunds

    • A traditional water conservation system predominantly used in Kolhapur district.
    • These bunds include needle structures to control water flow and storage.

    Percolation Tanks

    • Traditional water storage systems designed to conserve water and increase groundwater levels by percolation into nearby wells.
